The Samek Art Museum is a program of Bucknell University that creates meaningful encounters between artists, students, scholars, the public, and works of art. These encounters occur in the Samek Gallery, the Downtown Gallery, the Collection Study Room, and across campus in pop-up exhibitions and permanent art installations during our public hours of 12-5pm. Presenting visual fine art in critical contexts consistent with Bucknell's high academic standards, the Museum challenges students and extends the intellectual life of campus in an informal lifelong learning environment.

This position works independently, and is entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the public face of the museum and first point of contact for visitors. Museum Guides ensure the safety of the gallery and collection as well as provide a friendly and welcoming experience to visitors. The museum guide reports directly to the Operations Coordinator. This position will also regularly work with the public programs and outreach manager. The museum guide fulfills his/her duties in accordance with campus, state, and federal policies and laws as well as in keeping with museum and gallery professional practices.

Job Duties:
- Serve as public face for the museum and first point of contact for visitors
- Greet and engage audience with artwork
- Keep daily tally of visitor attendance
- Open and close gallery for public hours
- Read and contemplate provided educational materials about the exhibitions
- Monitor cleanliness of exhibition spaces and follow current Covid-19 guidelines
- Maintain security of the gallery and collection
- Keep museum staff up-to-date on condition of galleries and artwork


Minimum Qualifications:
• Interest in art, art history, museum studies, education or hospitality
• Outgoing and friendly demeanor with the public
• Must be available Saturdays, Sundays and Bucknell University recesses
• Must be available for mandatory paid meetings and training sessions
• Ability to work effectively as an independent self-starter

Work Type: 
This is a part-time, casual, non-benefits eligible position.

This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.

Salary Range:
This is a Staff Non-exempt position with a hiring range $8.11 - $10.13. The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.

The Community

Lewisburg (pop. 5,700) is located in central Pennsylvania and features beautiful Victorian homes, the restored art deco Campus Theatre (owned by the University), a variety of restaurants, shops and boutiques, and the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University Bookstore. It is the seat of Union County, which has about 44,000 residents.

The city of Williamsport is about a 30-minute drive from campus, and Penn State University’s main campus is about an hour away, as is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s state capital. Bucknell is within a three-hour drive of New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The cost of living is low compared to that of major U.S. cities and suburbs.
