The Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs provides strategic leadership for the Bucknell Office of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs (FSA), supervising two assistant directors. In concert with the assistant directors, the director will develop, build, administer and assess the comprehensive services, resources, staff and support for the Bucknell University fraternity and sorority community in the context of a liberal arts, residential institution with a deep commitment to equity, inclusion and collegial engagement. Bucknell maintains a rich tradition of Greek-letter organizations, beginning with the founding of the first fraternity in 1855 and the first sorority in 1895. The fraternity and sorority community is comprised of 16 chapters totaling approximately 40% of the eligible student body derived from a sophomore status-deferred recruitment program.
The Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs is a key staff member in Bucknell University's Division of Student Affairs. The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Students for Living, Learning & Leadership. Living, Learning & Leadership at Bucknell University strives to provide an intentional, integrated residential experience for students that enhances the academic mission of the University. We are a team of 13 full-time professionals who lead the areas of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Residential Education, First-Year Experience & Student Leadership Programs, and Housing Services. By centering student learning and inclusion, we strive to afford students the authorship of their own Bucknell experience and thoughtfully cultivate residential and leadership opportunities to advance individual growth and development. Job Duties:-Build and implement the strategic roadmap for the Bucknell Fraternity and Sorority Affairs community in concert with the Student Affairs and University strategic goals. Develop strategic initiatives, programs, and policies to support and strengthen Bucknell's national fraternity and sorority system within a residential, liberal arts context. -Establish initiatives to engage and collaboratively maximize the capacity of Bucknell FSA alumni for advising, programming, and financial resources to support FSA programs. -Develop training, communicate expectations, and establish a support structure for faculty, staff and alumni Chapter Advisers, Alumni Advisory Boards and Housing Corporations. -Implement a chapter accreditation model, establishing shared expectations governing the fraternity and sorority community that establishes a system to celebrate successes and incentivize maintaining good standing and which provides the means to assess each chapter's programs and goals consistent with university and national organization priorities. -Direct the FSA team in the execution of a chapter coaching model, advising the Greek councils, including NPHC and multicultural organizations and Greek honor societies (Order of Omega), a risk management training and compliance program, peer adviser training and development and FSA communications strategies. - Supervise, support, evaluate and mentor two Assistant Directors of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. -Oversee departmental budget and administrative functions of the office. In coordination with Housing Services, oversee the management of university-owned chapter facilities. -Develop and implement student leadership initiatives and programming focused on fraternities and sororities as value based, leadership organizations characterized by collegial engagement and social responsibility. -Oversee the annual recruitment and new member education efforts of fraternities and sororities, in accordance with appropriate University, international headquarter, NIC, NPC and NPHC guidelines. Lead administration of the responsible growth policy for Bucknell University gathering and maintaining data in accordance with the policy and responding to requests for expansion. -Uphold all policies and procedures of the University and collaborate with Student Conduct regarding fraternity and sorority conduct education and processes. Ensure congruence with University and National Headquarter compliance standards and procedures and best practices. -Build and maintain relationships with campus partners (Chapter Advisers, Faculty Governance, Housing, Facilities, Public Safety, Student Health & Wellness, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, General Counsel) and with external groups (National Organizations, Alumni, and Professional Organizations). -Communicate with fraternity and sorority stakeholders to advance the mission and values of the fraternity and sorority life community including creation of an annual community report. Provide additional reports on member and chapter GPAs, recruitment and membership statistics, and maintain the website and social media presence to tell the story of FSA at Bucknell University. -Serve in the on-call rotation for the Living, Learning & Leadership staff and assist with crisis intervention and support for students. Departmental and Divisional Responsibilities -Represent the Fraternity & Sorority Affairs department by serving on University committees. -Attend and actively participate in office, departmental and divisional staff meetings, retreats and trainings. -Maintain a high degree of visibility and availability to students, faculty and staff members. -Manage complex and sensitive issues with compassion and confidentiality. - This position requires some evening and weekend work. -Complete other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:- Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience. - Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, education or a related field. - Three years of progressively responsible experience leading, managing and supervising professionals. - Knowledge of and a working understanding of fraternity and sorority affairs and risk management policies in a residential university setting. - Ability to effectively interface with a wide variety of constituents including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and community members. - Appropriate involvement in professional development at the national level. - Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. - Effective written and spoken communication skills. - Strong commitment to student growth and development. Lewisburg (pop. 5,700) is located in central Pennsylvania and features beautiful Victorian homes, the restored art deco Campus Theatre (owned by the University), a variety of restaurants, shops and boutiques, and the Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University Bookstore. It is the seat of Union County, which has about 44,000 residents.
The city of Williamsport is about a 30-minute drive from campus, and Penn State University’s main campus is about an hour away, as is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s state capital. Bucknell is within a three-hour drive of New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
