The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Bucknell University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position to begin August 2019. We expect to hire at the assistant professor level but are open to considering outstanding candidates at other ranks. We seek an outstanding and enthusiastic educator with a passion for engaging undergraduates in the classroom and the laboratory. While all BME faculty are expected to teach broadly across our curriculum, candidates who are able to offer courses in bioinstrumentation and/or biomechanics are particularly encouraged to apply. An ability and commitment to pursue a research program that is of high quality and importance in any area of biomedical engineering and that engages undergraduate students is required. The candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to the development of new curricular and research opportunities as the department takes occupancy in a new academic building which includes both instructional and research facilities for biomedical engineering. A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive pedagogy and to institutional and departmental service are also required.

Candidates are expected to have a strong technical engineering foundation with a background in biology or health sciences, including a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or a closely related discipline. Clear evidence of a passion for excellence in teaching and a commitment to high-quality scholarship is essential. Demonstrated potential for continued professional development is also required.

Bucknell’s College of Engineering is a nationally recognized leader in undergraduate education. The Biomedical Engineering department offers an ABET accredited Bachelors of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering, and a minor in Biomedical Engineering. Bucknell’s Biomedical Engineering program provides an undergraduate engineering education in a liberal arts context that features close interactions with a small student body in a project and laboratory-intensive curriculum. The Biomedical Engineering department is committed to student-centered pedagogical approaches, high-impact activities that foster professional development for students and professional advancement of the field, and a community that fosters diversity and inclusion. Additionally, the department finds itself uniquely positioned to contribute to a broad health care ecosystem, supported by a variety of resources, including the Ciffolillo Healthcare Technology Inventors Program, as well as collaborative relationships with regional medical centers and the healthcare infrastructure.

3. a 1-2 page teaching statement addressing the applicant’s passion and interest in undergraduate teaching as well as a list of courses within Bucknell’s BME curriculum to which the applicant could contribute,
4. a 1-2 page scholarship statement addressing the applicant’s plan for scholarly work at Bucknell and how that work would engage undergraduates,
5. a 1-2 page statement addressing the applicant’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity at Bucknell, and
6. contact information for at least three potential references that the committee may contact to request letters, if necessary.

The Community

Located in central Pennsylvania, Lewisburg features a variety of restaurants, beautiful Victorian homes, the restored art deco Campus Theatre (owned by the University), charming shops and boutiques, and the Barnes and Noble at Bucknell University Bookstore. About 33,000 residents live in the region.

The city of Williamsport is about a 30-minute drive from campus, and Penn State University’s main campus is about an hour away, as is Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s state capital. Bucknell is about three hours from New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The cost of living here is low compared to that of major U.S. cities and suburbs. Bucknell’s surroundings yield fresh produce, cultural activities and events, and many opportunities for outdoor activity on the Susquehanna River and in the nearby state parks and forests. The Lewisburg Area School District receives excellent reviews for its schools at all grade levels. Lewisburg Area High School is consistently ranked among the top 50 high schools in Pennsylvania for SAT scores and statewide exams.
