This physically-active labor position includes duties such as grounds-keeping tasks including mowing, lawn and shrubbery installation and maintenance, snow removal, and leaf collection. You will also support Bucknell’s construction efforts, set-up/tear-down for various campus events, and moving of materials, furniture, and supplies. This is a full-time, 12 month, non-exempt, benefits eligible position. The immediate supervisor is the Labor Crew Leader.
Job Duties: • Use small hand tools and small grounds machines. • Perform such work as mowing grass; trimming trees and shrubs; weeding flower beds; preparing seed beds; planting trees and shrubs; lining playing fields; plowing and shoveling snow; operating power hand tools; operating equipment, trucks & buses; moving furniture and other equipment. • Perform related work as required to carry out University and student-related programs for set-up/tear-down for University facilities and grounds. • Perform without the direct aid of a supervisor, carry on a routine project, and help to direct other laborers if so directed by a supervisor. • Perform basic maintenance on fleet vehicles, such as washing, vacuuming, and oil changes. • Perform work in a safe and appropriate manner. • Immediately reports accidents, injuries, security violations, stolen or missing items and safety hazards and conditions, to an available supervisor. • Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the Support Staff Handbook. • From time to time must do custodial and other work such as trades helper support. • Adhere to OSHA standards, employs safe practices, and follows safety policies/procedures. Use PPE in a safe manner, sets examples for others, notifies supervisor of potential hazards, and demonstrates good housekeeping habits. • Contributes to Bucknell's commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. • Supports and promotes the University’s sustainability effort. • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisors.
This position is classified as part of essential services. Therefore, must have the ability to work evenings and weekends as required; and report to work even if campus has a delayed opening, early closing, or is closed, unless instructed otherwise by a supervisor or when the individual has concerns related to their personal safety. Post offer drug screening, driving history check, and background check will be conducted.
Minimum Qualifications: • High School diploma, GED, or vocational school diploma. • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written instructions. • One year of experience as a laborer, including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance/construction or an equivalent combination of experience and training. • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Class-3 operator's license and pesticide license. • Demonstrated ability to perform such work as mowing grass with small grounds machines as well as large area mowers, trimming trees and shrubs, weeding flower beds, preparing seed beds, planting trees and shrubs, lining playing fields, plowing and shoveling snow, operating power hand tools, operating equipment, trucks & buses, moving furniture and other equipment. • Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, students, other staff members. • Ability to work independently and as a team member including building and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships; take initiative; and use good judgment. • Demonstrated customer service and continuous improvement skills.
Preferred Qualifications: • Increasingly responsible grounds or landscape maintenance experience. • Experience performing specialized grounds maintenance duties such as irrigation system repair and maintenance, application of chemicals for pest, and insect and weed control. • Basic knowledge of computer operation including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets and email programs. • Demonstrated ability to maintain records, and meet schedules and timelines.
Physical Demands: • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. on a regular basis. • Ability to climb and work from ladders, roofs, and scaffolding. • Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, push, pull, reach, lift, and carry. • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
